Forensic Psychiatry

Forensic Psychiatry is the application of psychological/psychiatric pricinples to legal issues.  For criminal issues, forensic psychiatrists are often employed to look at the defendant’s mental state to help the criminal court system better understand the nature of the crime.  Other situations include assessing whether a minor should be tried as an adult, the capacity of the defendant to formulate the ‘mens rea’ or thought processes to fully understand the act done, or whether a defendant is competent to participate in the trial process.  Other issues that a forensic psychiatrist assist with are included in the link below.
