Michael A. Zona, M.D.
Dr. Zona received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree at the University of Massachusetts. He went on to receive his M.D. at the St. Louis University Medical School. He completed a four-year residency in psychiatry at the University of California Irvine Medical Center.
He then completed a two-year fellowship at the University of Southern California’s Institute of Psychiatry, Law, and Behavioral Science. In his capacity as Senior Fellow and Clinical Instructor, he specialized in stalking and obsessional behaviors, working with both victims as well as perpetrators. His research was recognized by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and was awarded, “Best Research by Forensic Fellow.”
His landmark research on stalkers has advanced the field by developing Stalker Profiles, or Typologies based upon the Suspect-Victim relationship. These typologies have been recognized and adopted by various federal, state, and corporate agencies, and has been universally referenced in the numerous psychiatric and legal literature. From 1991 to 1997, he was the primary consultant for the Los Angeles Police Department’s Threat Management Unit, which was the first unit in the country to focus on the crime of Stalking. Throughout his career, he has conducted research related to stalking, dangerous behavior, and intervention techniques.
Dr. Zona is a speaker nationally recognized and well known for his expertise on stalking and workplace violence. He now applies his medical expertise to the Preventative Medicine model, engaging and challenging corporations to prevent workplace violence. He consults for various public agencies and private corporations, and has assisted numerous corporations in their development of workplace violence policies and procedures. A member of several corporate crisis management teams, Dr. Zona has conducted numerous “work fitness” evaluations, giving him valuable insight into the minds of those employees who attempt to terrorize or do physical harm to others. He is also actively involved in the development of dangerousness profiles and the collection of a workplace violence database in conjunction with several major corporations.
Michael A. Zona, M.D. formed The Omega Threat Management Group, in 1996, where he consulted for various national agencies, studios, and ‘high-risk’ political and entertainment celebrities before leaving in 2002 to form his own consulting practice.
Dr. Zona’s clinical expertise is reflected in achieving Board Certification in Psychiatry and Neurology, with added Board Qualifications in both Geriatric Psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry. Dr. Zona has an active clinical practice, treating adult and geriatric patients. As Medical Director of the NeuroPsychiatry Unit at Western Medical Center, Santa Ana, CA, Dr. Zona developed the hospital’s Electroconvulsive Therapy program. He has personally conducted more than 3,500 treatments over the last 20 years, and has testified in the subject in various court proceedings. Other areas of interest and experience include hospital consultation, suicide risk, sexual harassment, physician wellness, diagnosis, detecting medical issues affecting symptoms, and medication management. He routinely consults on matters for both the Civil and Criminal Courts.
